Meet Peter
Hi there!
I’m a dog trainer and the founder and owner of Umwelt. Dogs have been an integral part of life for as long as I can remember, and I’m so happy that I’ve made a career out of working with them and their people!
I believe that training should be humane, enjoyable, and rooted in science. As such, I pursued and earned a Bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology from Brown University, and gained experience as a research and teaching assistant. My studies focused on ethology and comparative psychology, both of which inform my training methods today.
Aside from private training, the bulk of my hands-on experience comes from shelter settings, meaning I am especially confident with anxious, reactive, and under-socialized dogs. I’ve worked in shelters in and out of New York City, and am also a trainer at Hudson’s Hounds NYC and The Pawssociates.
I am certified by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. I am also a Canine Good Citizen evaluator and have worked extensively with therapy dogs and their handlers.
I believe that continuing education is vital for those in this field, and I’ve committed to being a lifelong student!
I live in Manhattan with my adopted Siamese cat Phoebe. My greyhound Squid, who inspired my logo, passed away in 2024, but I will be forever grateful to him.
I look forward to meeting you and your pup!
